Photos from this year’s Earth Day celebration

Thank you everyone who came out to celebrate Earth Day with us! Though the day started with some light rain, the sun made its grand entrance before the festivities were over.

We had face painting, sing-alongs, demonstrations and tours, and a lot of planting going on. We sowed peas and what we hope will one day be bunches of greens, as well as some beans and cucumber seedlings and a few flowers. More to come over the next few weeks as the weather gets warmer!

Harbinger of spring & first work day of the year

First crocus

The first crocus has popped up at the farm, and we took advantage of a sunny Saturday to have our first official work day of 2016. We started repairing three compost bins that have been out of use for the last few months, mostly removing the rotted wood and detaching the screens and starting to reattach fresh wood. Other members worked finished compost into a few beds in early preparation for the growing season.

Weather permitting, we’ll have another work day Saturday, March 5th to finish the bin repair and lay down bricks for the repaired bins to rest on.

2016 at Prospect Farm

Mark your calendars for a general Prospect Farm meeting on Monday, February 29 at 7 PM. All returning and new members are invited. Please email us for location info. At the meeting, we will elect board members and begin planning for planting. There are lots of roles open, from planting to cultivating to composting to building infrastructure to helping out with events (to name a few).

We hope to have a work day soon (possibly January 23, weather permitting) to repair compost bins and add finished compost to the beds. We will confirm the date as it gets closer.

In the meantime, enjoy winter!

Earth Day Photos

Trellising for peas

Our 2015 Earth Day event was great! We had a number of parents with small children who loved the worms, the planting, and just being on “the farm.” All the food was delicious, and we got some work done as well. Special thanks to the composters, the planters, the trellis-constructors, the step-repairers, and the weeders.
